Which Is Better: Traditional Braces or Invisalign?

In recent years, the realm of dentistry has introduced a variety of new technologies and techniques for oral treatments, one of which being Invisalign. Invisalign is a form of “clear braces” that can be used as an alternative to traditional braces, but how do you know which is best for your child? Before you make a fiscal decision, read what Calgary Orthodontist, Dr. Michael Popp, has to say about these two viable options.

  • Invisalign broke ground in 1998 as a more comfortable and aesthetic alternative to metal braces. The Invisalign process is quite similar to traditional braces as your orthodontist will take x-rays and molds of your mouth so that perfectly tailored (plastic) trays can be made to fit your teeth. Typically, a patient will wear these trays or, clear aligners, for a two week period before they are replaced by new, modified aligners and so on. Due to the plastic, softer composition, Invisalign causes less irritation and inflammation than metal braces. Some other attributes of Invisalign are:
  • Aesthetics: Since Invisalign is made up of clear, plastic trays they’re virtually invisible, hence the name. This is a highly attractive feature for adolescents as well as adults in need or orthodontics.
  • Reduced Plaque and Inflammation Issues: Invisalign allows for better teeth cleaning since they are removable and decreases chances of gingivitis.
  • Limited Deep Root Movement: Invisalign is slightly inferior to metal braces when it comes to deep root movement. Teeth require a strong force to grip and shift them into new positions. Some complex issues like abnormal bites may be better suited for traditional braces.
  • Longer Treatment: Since the plastic trays require fabrication time, it can extend the overall treatment time. Also, patients are accountable for their treatment since the trays are removable. Every time a tray is removed, your teeth are susceptible to shifting.

Traditional Braces apply metal brackets and wires to the face of each tooth to properly align teeth and jaw lines. Since metal braces are cemented on, they provide constant hold and control of stubborn teeth. Here are some additional features:

  • Functionality: Since braces are immovable, they provide patients with quick and efficient treatments. Patients with braces typically require shorter treatment periods than those with Invisalign.
  • Correct Complex Issues: Metal braces are highly effective at correcting complex oral issues, such as abnormal bites, crowded teeth, bridge complications and large gaps.
  • Speech Issues: Some patients may experience speech difficulties after initial placement. However, many patients become accustomed to the change, while some experience minor issues throughout the during of their treatment.

We all want our children to have healthy smiles that boost their confidence and either option is fully capable of doing so. Talk to your Calgary orthodontist about your child’s specific needs to determine which option is best.
