by Dr. Michael Popp on Nov 27, 2018

Has your dentist suggested veneers as a viable option to restore the aesthetics and function to your smile? Here’s how to choose the right shade of dental veneers for the most natural results.

Dental veneers are an innovative and popular type of cosmetic dentistry treatment that is designed to enhance the overall appearance of your teeth and smile. In most cases, they are placed on the front teeth, and those on the sides that show when you smile or talk.

Veneers can be used to correct a number of dental concerns, such as:

  • Spaces between teeth
  • Chips and cracks
  • Minor misalignments
  • Discoloration
  • Poorly shaped or crooked teeth

Veneers: Choosing the Right Shape and Shade For You

Dental veneers are not a one-size-fits all solution, and the shape and shade that looks best on one patient, may not look right on another. So while your dentist will help guide you in your final choice of veneers, it’s important to have an idea of how you want your veneers to look before your appointment.

Here are some things you want to keep in mind when choosing the right veneer shape and shade for you.

Choosing Your Shade of White

Contrary to popular opinion, there is not just one shade of white. There are many different variations to choose from when picking out the right color for your veneers. You want to pick a shade that looks like a bright, healthy set of natural teeth.

Tip: If you go too white, then your new smile will look unnatural and not as aesthetically pleasing.

Here are some tips when choosing the white shade for your veneers:

  • Use the whites of your eyes for guidance. Your veneers should never be whiter than the whites of your eyes.
  • Fairer skin tones should pick from the whitest colors available. Since fairer skin doesn’t contrast with the color of the teeth very much, a lighter shade is necessary to make your teeth appear white.
  • Darker skin tones should select naturally occurring tooth shades and stay away from the bleaching shades, as this will look unnatural.

You should also talk to your dentist about veneer color layering. This makes veneers look even more like natural teeth, as real teeth are more opaque in the centre, and translucent towards their edges.

Choosing The Right Veneer Shape

Once you have chosen the right shade for your veneers, then the next important task to tackle is choosing the right shape. When doing this, here are several factors you should consider:

  • Your face shape. The right veneers should compliment your face shape. For example, longer and thinner veneers can visibly slim a rounder face. But if you have a long face, then shorter and wider veneers will be perfect for you.

  • Your gender. Often, more masculine smiles are created with square veneers. Patients who want their smiles to look more feminine should opt for softer, more rounded ones.

  • Your age. Teeth naturally lose length during aging, so lengthening your veneers can help you look younger. Also, bulking up your teeth can help smooth wrinkles around the mouth area. Thicker front veneers can also give you the appearance of fuller lips.
