Importance of Visiting A Dentist During a Dental Emergency

Do you have a dental emergency? Here’s why it’s important to see a dentist & how to deal with the associated dental prices.

Dental emergencies can happen to anyone and given that any injury to the teeth and/or gums could have potentially grave consequences, it’s important to visit a dentist as soon as possible.

Ignoring a dental emergency can lead to permanent damage as well as more extensive treatment later on, increasing your dental fees significantly.

Whether you are suffering from a broken tooth or a lost filling, our Calgary dentists can provide emergency dental care at affordable prices. So don’t put off your treatment for another day!

Types of Dental Emergencies

If you are currently experiencing tooth pain, it may mean that it’s time to seek treatment from a dental professional.

Not sure if your problem is an emergency? Here are some examples of dental emergencies as well as some simple steps you can take to minimize your pain before you see the dentist:

Bitten Lip and/or Tongue

Make sure to clean the area and apply an ice pack to reduce any swelling and/or pain.

If the bleeding doesn’t stop, visit your dentist straight away.

Broken Tooth

Keep any pieces of the broken tooth safe and rinse your mouth with warm water.

A cold compress will help reduce any swelling and pain until you can visit your dentist.

Knocked-Out Tooth

It’s important to handle the tooth without removing any attached tissue. Gently rinse the tooth and, if possible, hold it in place in the socket.

This dental emergency requires IMMEDIATE attention so be sure to get to your dentist straight away.

Lost Dental Filling/Crown

For dental fillings, seal the area with a piece of sugarless gum or over-the-counter dental cement.

If your dental crown has come loose, try to hold it in place using dental cement. If that doesn’t work, be sure to bring it with you to the dentist.

Dental Abscess

If you notice any painful, pimple-like swellings on your gum, rinse with warm salt water and immediately contact an emergency dentist.

If left untreated, this dental emergency can lead to more serious infections.

Toothache

Toothaches can be a major annoyance. Rinse your mouth out with warm water and use dental floss to make sure there isn’t any food or debris causing the pain.

If the pain persists, contact your dentist straight away.

Mouth Injury

In the event of an open wound inside the mouth (laceration or other trauma), clean the area with warm water. Then apply pressure to the affected area.

Contact your dentist to discuss what further action needs to be taken.

Why it’s Important to See Your Dentist For Any Dental Emergencies

Having access to an emergency dentist can be very beneficial to your health and while some patients may put off treatment out of worry about high dental prices, this technique may result in higher long-term dental fees.

Some of the benefits of seeing an emergency dentist as soon as possible include:

  • Tooth loss prevention
  • Pain relief
  • Lower long-term dental fees
  • Prevention of any dental infections
  • Improved appearance

REMEMBER: With any dental emergencies, prompt treatment is key. Waiting too long to see the dentist or neglecting your condition can lead to serious oral and health problems down the road.
