Choosing the right family dentist is an important decision for you and your family. They should be able to provide a high level of oral care at affordable dental prices and build a trustworthy relationship that will last for many years.

When choosing a dentist, it’s important to look at many factors including their training and the services they provide to meet your whole family’s needs including:

At Marlborough Dental Centre, we strive to meet the dental needs of your entire family from children to grandparents, providing high-quality services and affordable dental fees to ensure you and your loved ones never have to worry about your oral health.

Affordable Dental Fees & Services

With the economy in a recession, many families are now looking for more affordable children’s and adult dentistry services. Unfortunately, many are postponing crucial treatment because of high dental prices.

However, it’s important to remember that dental health affects your overall health and forgoing dental care can contribute to significant health problems - and lead to more costly dental fees down the line.

So what are your options?

1. Government Programs

While dental fees for routine treatments such as cleanings, whitening and extractions are not covered under Alberta Health Care Insurance, there are some specific oral and maxillofacial surgical services that are. Be sure to ask your dentist for any details prior to your treatment.

For example, Alberta seniors with low-to-moderate incomes may be eligible for some benefits under the Dental & Optical Assistance for Seniors Program.

To be eligible for this, you must:

  • Be over the age of 65
  • Have lived in Alberta for at least 3 months before applying
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident

2. Preventative Dental Care

Preventative dental care is one of the most efficient ways to lower your dental fees, especially when it comes to children’s dentistry.

Brushing and flossing daily can prevent conditions such as cavities and gum disease which require costly treatments and scheduling annual dental exams can help keep your long-term dental prices down.

In addition, regular visits to your dentist can have many benefits including:

  • A brighter, healthier smile
  • Tooth loss prevention
  • Lower risks of cavities and other oral diseases
  • Regular screenings for oral cancer

3. Private Dental Insurance Plans

Seeing your dentist regularly is an important part of maintaining good oral and overall health, but without a dental plan, regular visits can become expensive.

However, ignoring your dental problems now can lead to even more costly dental care later and, in extreme cases, other health problems.

If you aren’t covered for your dental through your job, you may want to consider purchasing private insurance.

This has many benefits including:

  • Easier payment transactions (due to direct billing)
  • Lower dental fees
  • Encourages you to visit your dentist regularly
  • Provides you with peace of mind

However, before you purchase any product, you should ensure that the dental insurance you choose should match your needs.

Our administrative team has a lot of experience with dental plans and costs and can work with you to assess the type of insurance coverage you need and set up the appropriate process for direct billing, if applicable.

4. Ask For A Discount

Don’t have dental insurance? You could always try lower your dental fees the old fashioned way: asking for a discount. In fact, a national survey found that only 10% of patients had attempted to negotiate a lower dental price - but out of those that did - 64% were successful.

Don’t be afraid to talk to your dentist about the cost of your procedure when making the appointment and you can even discuss:

  • Payment options - If you have an extensive treatment such as a root canal or wisdom tooth extraction coming up and are worried about the cost, be sure to talk to your dentist beforehand about payment options.
  • Payment by cash - For some dentists, direct cash payments are preferable to filing tedious insurance claims. If you offer to pay by cash, some clinics are willing to offer lower dental prices.
