4 Causes of Jaw Pain

Are you suffering from jaw pain? From TMJ treatments to scaling, here’s how our Calgary dentists can help make you more comfortable and restore your quality of life.

While many Calgarians only visit their dentist when they are experiencing a dental emergency, such as a chipped tooth or a toothache, it’s far better for your overall and dental health to schedule regular check-ups.

Not only will this save you money in the long run, but will allow your dentist to:

  • screen for oral cancer.
  • remove any plaque and lower your risk of developing cavities.
  • detect, diagnose, and treat any gum disease.
  • clean your teeth for a brighter, whiter smile.

6 Reasons Why You Have Jaw Pain

Millions of Canadians suffer from jaw pain at one point in their lives and this is caused by a variety of reasons. You may be suffering from TMJ, arthritis in your jaw, or a sinus problem, but whatever the reason, a visit to your dentist can help diagnose the problem and successfully treat it.

In the meantime, here are 6 dental problems that may be causing your jaw pain:

1. Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

Bruxism is a term that is used to describe the tendency of a patient to grind their teeth or clench their jaw as they sleep or concentrate. The condition can ultimately result in a painful and sore jaw and a higher risk for certain dental problems in the future.

Other symptoms of Bruxism include:

  • chipped, cracked, or flat teeth.
  • right jaw muscles.
  • neck/jaw/face pain.
  • earaches
  • headaches
  • bites in the inside of your cheeks

What to do: If you suffer from Bruxism, talk to your dentist about wearing a custom-made night guard that helps protect your teeth and prevent jaw pain.

2. Temporomandibular Joint Disease

If you are experiencing pain that radiates into your face, jaw, or neck, then this could be caused by temporomandibular joint disease (TMJ). Possible causes of this disorder include:

  • jaw injury
  • grinding/clenching teeth
  • arthritis in the jaw
  • stress

Customised TMJ Treatment: At Marlborough Dental Clinic, we offer customised TMJ treatments to combat any trouble you may experience with chewing/biting/moving your jaw and reduce any head, neck, and facial pain you may have.

3. Trauma

Just like with any other bone in your body, you can knock your jaw out of place or break it.

This can cause:

  • swelling
  • pain
  • loose or knocked out teeth
  • bruises

In most cases, over-the-counter medication or eating soft foods temporarily will help ease your discomfort as you heal but if the pain won’t go away, or you can’t open and close your mouth properly, then you should visit your emergency dentist straight away.

4. General Dental Problems

There are many different types of general dental issues that can lead to prolonged jaw pain. This includes:

  • a toothache, usually due to an abscess or cavity.
  • teeth that are cracked, crowded, or sensitive to temperature or pressure.
  • gum disease, which can damage your jawbone.

If you are worried that you might be suffering from one of the above oral problems, then it’s important to schedule an appointment with your dentist. In the meantime, rinse your mouth with warm water and use dental floss to get rid of any food debris in between the tooth that hurts.
