What is Sedation Dentistry?

Going to the dentist's office should always be a positive experience. After all, you are taking care of your body and your health; that should feel good! Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for many individuals. Even if you dislike visiting the dentist’s office, it is still a vital part of your overall body health that needs to be specially taken care of. For those who don’t enjoy the dentist but still need to take care of their oral health, sedation dentistry is an excellent alternative.

We often think of sedation dentistry as only being used for major surgeries or procedures such as wisdom teeth removal. However, sedation dentistry can be used for just about any dental appointment. During sedation dentistry, one of our expert Calgary dentists will administer an oral sedative that will allow you to enter into deep relaxation. Once the sedative has taken effect, you will feel very calm but will not go to sleep. However, you will likely have no memory of the appointment.

Sedation dentistry is incredibly safe, comfortable, rapid, and painless. If you are interested in the possibility of sedation dentistry, let’s find out if it is a good option for you!

How Do I Know If It Is Right For Me?

1. You find dental work painful

Because we are all different, we all experience different levels of discomfort at the dentist. If you find that you are sensitive to pain in and around your mouth during a dental checkup or procedure, sedation dentistry can be an effective method of pain mitigation.

2. Your dental procedure will be lengthy

It goes without saying that for lengthy dental procedures, sedation dentistry is quite effective. Even the most patient of individuals can start to feel the discomfort of sitting in a dental chair for appointments that cross the one-hour mark. If your upcoming trip to the dentist is expected to be lengthy, sedation dentistry can help make what would be uncomfortable stretches of time fly by!

3. You suffer from dental anxiety

One of the most common reasons why patients elect sedation dentistry for their regular six-month checkup is because they suffer from dental anxiety. Dental anxiety is the term that has been coined to describe the feeling of fear, stress, or worry that one gets in a dental environment. The condition is associated with higher rates of dental illnesses and avoiding dental treatment.

If you believe you fit into this description, sedation dentistry can help make your trip to the dentist much less stressful so that you can get the dental care you need.

4. You have a strong gag reflex

Unfortunately, the prevalence of our gag reflex is often outside of our control and can significantly impact your dentist’s ability to treat you. Sedation dentistry can relax your reflex so that you can be more comfortable, and your dentist can complete the treatment more quickly.

5. The atmosphere of the dentist’s office bothers you

We get it. For lots of people, the sights, sounds, and smells of a dental clinic can be very unsettling. This is completely normal! There are not many other places in the world that have a similar atmosphere to a dental office. When under sedation, all of the sights, sounds, and smells of the office will drift away, allowing you to relax comfortably while taking care of your teeth.

What form of sedation dentistry do you use?

There are many ways that dentists sedate their patients. The three most common methods are via nitrous oxide (laughing gas), IV sedation, and oral sedation. At our NE Calgary Dental Clinic, we use oral sedation techniques.

Can I drive home after my sedation dentistry?

While the sedative wears off, you will be unable to drive or operate any hazardous equipment for the first 24 hours. We advise you to have a responsible adult be with you during the appointment to take you home and until the sedative wears off.

Can any dentist perform sedation dentistry?

Not all dentists are trained or qualified to administer sedation dentistry. At Marlborough Dental Centre, our dentists and hygienists have decades of experience administering sedation dentistry for people of varying walks of life.
