The Root Canal

The original is always better! For example, the original Star Wars trilogy trumps the prequels, and the same concept can be applied to your teeth. You need to hold onto your original teeth! If the nerve of your tooth becomes infected and goes untreated, you’ll eventually reach a point of critical mass, ultimately losing the tooth. The effects of losing teeth can compound in all aspects of your life, physically and emotionally. At Marlborough Dental Centre in Calgary, Dr. Michael Popp wants you to embrace the root canal and not fear it! The root canal is a dental procedure that is comfortably performed by Dr. Popp, and can save you from having to extract an infected tooth.

On one hand, you have the word ROOT. Trees and plants have them and they swear by them.

On the other hand, you have the word CANAL, which is a pretty cool man-made water system.

The two words individually seem boring; however, put them side by side, it becomes a part of dental lore. As scary as popular culture has made root canals out to be, they really aren’t, and you’re probably wondering, what’s Dr. Popp exactly doing when performing a root canal?

You stroll into the Marlborough Dental Centre in NE Calgary and make your way to Dr. Popp’s world famous dentist chair. Dr. Popp will apply local anesthetic, freezing the tooth and surrounding area. He will then place a rubber dam around the troubled tooth, preventing any bacteria in your saliva from reaching the treated tooth. Dr. Popp will then treat the infected tooth by drilling a hole to the root canal system. After reaching the root, Dr. Popp will use his dental instruments to remove infected pulp, clean the area and enlarge the root canal system. The infection is completely removed and Dr. Popp now will fill and seal the canal. Your tooth is hollow at this point, and needs to be fortified with a temporary or permanent filling. A majority of root canals will require a crown to complete the restoration of the tooth.

Marlborough Dental Centre believes that regular scheduled checkups are the best preventative measure you can take from developing any dental problems. If you’re experiencing a toothache, visit Dr. Michael Popp as soon as possible! An infection in a single tooth can spread quickly and can lead to you losing a precious natural tooth.

If you require a root canal or any dental procedure, contact Dr. Michael Popp at the Marlborough Dental Centre in NE Calgary today on (403) 248-2066.
