How to Choose The Right Type of Dental Veneer For Your Lifestyle

Do you have chipped, discoloured, or damaged teeth that are making you feel self-conscious? Dental veneers are an innovative cosmetic dentistry treatment that can give you the naturally beautiful smile you’ve always desired.

A dental veneer is constructed from a small, thin shell of either porcelain, ceramic, or a resin-based composite, and it is designed to fit perfectly over the front of your teeth. Your Calgary family dentist may use it to address a number of oral concerns, including:

  • Discolouration
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Minor misalignments
  • Poorly shaped teeth

3 Types of Dental Veneers: How to Choose

Typically, dental veneers will be placed on the front teeth which are damaged, and those on the sides that show when you smile. Your family dentist will bond the veneer directly to the surface of your teeth, and when this is done correctly, the result will be a naturally beautiful and healthy-looking smile.

If you are considering dental veneers, here are the three types that you can choose from:

1. Ceramic Veneers

Ceramic veneers are the most commonly used type of veneers and are often highly recommended due to their:

  • Natural looking appearance
  • Durability
  • Ability to mimic the function of natural teeth

Drawback: However, ceramic veneers do take longer to create than other veneers, and for a few days after the procedure, you may experience some tooth sensitivity.

2. Porcelain Veneers

For patients who are looking to make minor position alterations, or to change their tooth size/shape/colour, then your family dentist may suggest porcelain veneers. These offer many advantages, including:

  • They can last up to 15 years with proper care
  • With porcelain veneers, less tooth needs to be shaved down
  • You can enjoy a very natural and realistic tooth appearance
  • They are thinner than ceramic veneers

Drawback: Veneers are more expensive than other types of veneers and if they break, they cannot be repaired and will have to be replaced.

3. Resin-Based Composite Veneers

These are a very cost-effective option for anyone looking to improve the appearance of their smile. They are typically completed in one dental visit and can be sculpted at the time of placement. If you are considering resin-based composite veneers, they can offer a multitude of benefits, including:

  • Quick treatment time
  • Less tooth preparation compared to other types of veneers
  • Extremely cost effective. They cost approximately half that of porcelain veneers

Drawback: Resin-based composite veneers are more likely to stain, chip, or break. They also have a shorter lifespan than other veneers, typically 5-10 years if taken care of properly.

Am I a Good Candidate For Dental Veneers?

Veneers are a very affordable and effective treatment for most patients, however, they are not meant for every patient or every tooth. During a dental exam, your family dentist can determine if this is the right treatment for you.

You may NOT be a good candidate for dental veneers if you:

  • Have teeth with decay or active gum disease
  • Have weakened teeth, due to treatments such as fillings
  • Suffer from bruxism
  • Don’t have enough healthy enamel
