A Parents Guide to Pediatric Dentistry

A visit to the Dentist can be a daunting experience for a child and their parents. However, important oral hygiene is important at any age, especially during a child’s transition from baby teeth to adult teeth. Here at Marlborough Dental we are committed to keeping your child’s mouth healthy from the very first tooth. Here are 3 things every parent should know before they take their child to the dentist.

  1. Keeping baby teeth healthy is very important, even though they are going to fall out
Healthy teeth are an integral part when it comes to your child developing normal speech patterns, being able to eat properly, and developing the confidence that comes with having an attractive smile. Baby teeth are lost in a specific order so that adult teeth can emerge in the most favourable positions. If teeth fall out prematurely due to poor hygiene this can affect how and when adult teeth emerge. If baby teeth do not fall out this can also indicate a more serious problem, such as the root being attached to the bone. Untreated cavities in baby and teeth can also result in life threatening infections.
  2. When should my child start seeing a dentist?
As soon as your child gets his or her first tooth the factors necessary for cavities to develop (exposure to sugar, bacteria, etc) are present. As such, a child should begin to visit the dentist around his or her first birthday. Early checkups can also reveal any tooth areas that are high risk for cavities, and provide insight into the growth and development of adult teeth. Starting early visits also helps your child to develop a lifetime of good dental habits.
  3. How often should my child visit the dentist?
Like all patients, children should visit the dentist at least every six months. However, this may vary depending on your child’s individual needs, his or her eating habits and how well he or she cares for his or her teeth.
