Am I a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?
While almost any patient can benefit from oral conscious sedation, this service best addresses the following conditions:
- Dental fear or anxiety
- Sensitive gag reflex
- Pain sensitivity
- Sore jaw muscles
- Discomfort sitting for long periods of time
Sedation Dentistry Initial Consultation
Prior to deciding whether or not oral conscious sedation is the right choice for you, it is very important to talk to one of our sedation dentists about your medical history, anxiety level and any current medications you are taking.
Based on this information and the type of dental treatment you require, our Calgary dentists can then prescribe the type and dosage of dental sedation to best meet your needs.
Sedation Dentistry Before and After Care
While sedation dentistry is a simple and straight-forward service, there are a few precautions you should take prior to and after your procedure.
Before the procedure
-
Do not eat or drink anything 6 hours prior to your appointment unless otherwise directed by the sedation dentist
-
You will need to take some time off work following your dental treatment. For short appointments, half a day may be sufficient. If a longer treatment is planned, you should plan to take the remainder of the day off
-
Ask a responsible family member or friend to drive you to and from the dental clinic
-
You may be given a prescription for a sedative to take the night before your appointment to guarantee a good night’s sleep and to make sure you wake up relaxed
After the procedure
-
Do not operate or drive any heavy equipment for at least 24 hours after your treatment
-
Drink lots of fluids to help flush the sedative from your system
-
Have a family member or friend stay with you until the effects of the sedative have worn off
Are there any side effects of sedation dentistry?
Some of the temporary side effects associated with sedation dentistry include dry mouth, headaches, nausea and dizziness.
Prior to your appointment, our sedation dentists will take the time to discuss all the possible risks to make sure that you make a fully-informed decision about your treatment.
