Pediatric dentists play an important role in the oral and overall health of your child. That’s why regular visits to a kids dentist are so important. If it’s been a while since your little one had his/her last checkup, here are some signs that you need to visit your dentist today.
Oral health care is very important for children and should begin when your baby gets his/her very first tooth. Without regular visits to the kids dentist, even baby teeth can decay and cause unwanted problems such as:
- Painful teeth and gums
- Difficulty chewing and sleeping
- Gum disease
- Gum inflammation
Remember: Baby teeth hold a space for your child’s permanent ones, which is why it’s so important that they keep a healthy mouth.

6 Signs Your Child Needs to Visit the Dentist
Your little one’s oral health is key to their overall well-being, which is why regular dental checkups every 6 months are so important. However, there may be times when it’s necessary to visit the dentist more often.
Here are 6 signs that your child may need to see the dentist in between their regular appointments:
1. Your child has a toothache. Pain is an indication that something may be wrong, so if your child has a toothache, it’s important to visit a dentist quickly. Whatever the cause, the sooner the condition can be assessed and addressed, the better.
2. You’ve noticed white/brown spots on your child’s teeth. Does your child have chalky or white spots on their teeth? This may be an early sign of a cavity and you must see your dentist promptly. Tooth decay can progress very quickly and lead to more serious issues, so it’s important to take fast action.
3. Your child is complaining of irritated gums. Does your child complain of hurting gums after brushing? Are their gums red, swollen, or bleeding? This could be an indication of gingivitis or other health care concerns, so have your kid’s dentist check it out as soon as possible.
4. You’ve noticed a sensitivity to hot and cold foods and drinks. Are hot and cold foods causing your child to complain of dental pain? This could be a warning sign that your child may be getting a cavity, so have your dentist assess it.
5. Your child has a loose tooth. As your child grows, their baby teeth will start to follow out. This is very natural and can carry on up to 12 years old. However, if a permanent tooth becomes loose, whether it’s due to an injury or decay, then your dentist will need to do an examination.
6. Issues with adult teeth. Sometimes, an adult tooth erupts without forcing out the baby tooth. If this occurs, a dentist will have to intervene. In other cases, the adult teeth may come in crooked, or with other concerns. Your kids' dentist can assess the situation and recommend your child sees an orthodontist in the future.
