What to Expect From Your Teeth Cleaning Appointment

Has it been a while since your last teeth cleaning appointment? While ideally, you should visit your dental hygienist at least twice a year, it can be easy to let these appointments fall to the wayside. Here’s what to expect from your teeth cleaning appointment and why it’s important never to neglect these visits:

1. Dental Examination

When you arrive for your teeth cleaning appointment, your dentist/dental hygienist will perform a dental examination of your teeth, gums, and other oral soft tissues. Your dentist will also most likely check for any signs of decay, gum disease, or other dental health issues.

2. X-Rays

Your dental healthcare professional may then take an x-ray to assess the health of your teeth roots, supporting jawbone and surrounding structures. If you are prone to tooth decay or gum disease, or have ongoing dental issues, they you may require more frequent x-rays.

3. Removal of Plaque and Tartar

After the dental exam and x-rays are completed, it is time for your teeth cleaning. During this procedure, your dental hygienist will use specific tools to remove any plaque deposits, tartar and food particles from the surface of your teeth.

I practice good dental hygiene at home. Do I need a dental cleaning?

Even if you do brush twice a day and floss regularly and consider your dental hygiene impeccable, you will still require a teeth cleaning to remove any deposits from hard to reach areas. This will ensure that your entire mouth is kept clean and healthy.

4. Tooth Polishing

Over time, it’s very natural for your teeth to collect stains due to the food you eat and certain lifestyle habits. During your cleaning, a special toothpaste and rubber polishing cup will be used to remove these stains and restore a bright, white appearance to your smile.

Note: While you may hear a hum produced by the dental handpiece used to polish your teeth, the procedure itself is not uncomfortable.

5. Professional Flossing

Your dental hygienist may even floss between your teeth. This will allow them to detect any areas of concern and offer advice on how to keep your teeth clean. For example, some patients may benefit from the use of floss threaders, dental picks or interproximal brushes.

6. Oral Cancer Screening

One of the most important aspects of teeth cleaning is that it allows your dental hygienist to perform an oral cancer screening. This involves a visual and physical examination of your head neck and mouth. The simple screening takes only minutes but can play a significant role in your oral health.
