5 Tips For Maintaining Your Oral Health During COVID-19

During this period of uncertainty, our Calgary dentists have suspended all non-emergency dental treatments, but we are always available if you require urgent dental care. To help you avoid such situations, here are some tips on maintaining your dental health during COVID-19.

As we enter a period of difficulty and uncertainty, the main priority of our Calgary dental clinic is protecting the health and well-being of our patients. To play our part in limiting the spread of COVID-19, we have suspended all non-emergency dental care as mandated by the Alberta Dental Association.

However, we are still only a phone call away for patients who are experiencing dental emergencies. We are able to discuss your situation and determine whether or not you need to come in for an appointment.

Some urgent dental emergencies that may require you to visit the clinic include:

  • Tooth abscess or severe infection
  • Dental or jaw pain that isn’t manageable with over-the-counter pain medication
  • A knocked out tooth
  • Bleeding that won’t stop
  • Injury to your mouth or face

How to Take Care of Your Teeth During COVID-19 and Prevent a Dental Emergency

We don’t want your dental health to be put at risk during the COVID-19 crisis, and while we are only providing urgent dental emergency care at the moment, we urge our patients to do what they can at home to protect their dental well-being.

Here are some oral healthcare tips to follow during this time:

1. Maintain an Excellent Oral Care Regime

Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day - as soon as you get up in the morning and right before you go to bed. When you do brush your teeth, brush them for at least two minutes, as this will allow adequate time to ensure every tooth surface is cleaned thoroughly.

Pro Tip: Electric toothbrushes are great because they have built-in timers, but if you are using a manual brush, try to keep a small timer in the bathroom or use your smartphone.

2. Replace Your Toothbrush Regularly

Many people forget to replace their toothbrushes, but you must do this every 2-3 months, or more regularly if it starts to look worn or splayed. Remember, if your toothbrush is old or worn out, it won’t clean your teeth effectively and you are putting yourself at higher risk of dental problems down the road, such as decay.

3. Flossing is a Must

Dental floss is a traditional and straightforward way to clean between your teeth, but if you have trouble with it, why not try interdental brushes or soft picks? Failing to adequately floss leaves approximately one-third of your tooth surfaces uncleaned, which greatly increases your chance of tooth decay and gum disease.

If you find it tricky to clean between your teeth, then talk to your dentist and they can give you some advice on how best to approach this.

4. Reduce Your Daily Intake of Sugar

When you frequently snack on sugary foods, it increases the acidity in your mouth. This acid attacks your tooth enamel and weakens it, eventually resulting in cavities. So be careful about your intake of sugar and if you want to snack on sweet treats, include them as part of your main meal, as it will reduce the amount of time your mouth is acidic and the potential damage to your teeth.

5. Stay Hydrated

Your body needs a lot of water so that it can produce enough saliva to maintain your oral health. Why is this important? Saliva is a protective fluid that helps your mouth maintain a more neutral pH, and it washes away excess food particles, old skin cells, and bacteria. It also contains specific minerals to protect your teeth and lower your risk of decay.
