I Want a Perfect Smile: Should I Get Veneers?

Dentistry is about more than just cleanings and fillings, it is about helping create the perfect smile for you. If you have discolored, chipped, or misaligned teeth, or have gaps between your teeth, you may want to consider getting veneers.

What are veneers?

Veneers are incredibly thin sheets of ceramic or porcelain, which are bonded to your natural teeth using a special type of glue. Veneers, usually used on the front teeth, can can correct things like chipped, discolored or misaligned teeth. Chipped teeth that reside further back in the mouth will likely need to be given crowns.

Why should I get veneers?

Aside from correcting chips, misalignments or stains, veneers are also durable. They will help protect your teeth from further staining and damage. The smooth surface of the veneer is very effective at fighting off stains from everyday foods such as coffee, tea and red wine.

How long do veneers last?

With proper oral care porcelain veneers can last up to 20 years and still maintain their whiteness and shine. This is compared to composite veneers, where a composite resin is used to cover the teeth, which only last about 7 years on average.

What if I have several defects on my teeth?

Veneers are able to correct multiple cosmetic defects at once, since they simply cover the chipped, stained and/or misaligned tooth with a beautiful porcelain finish. This means that you will spend less time at the dentist’s office and more time doing what you love.

Are they hard to take care of?

Most people are surprised at how low-maintenance veneers can be. Veneers will need to be brushed and flossed regularly, just like natural teeth. The only real difference when it comes to care is that you should visit your dentist regularly so that your veneers can be polished with a special, non abrasive paste. If you grind your teeth while you sleep you will also need to wear a mouthguard to bed, so you can avoid damaging the veneers.
